Millions of years ago, rats were the size of bears!!!! The common housepet rat, or fancy rat, is a good pet. Fancy rats learn to trust humans in a matter of weeks. Rats provide their own grooming. Rats need mostly rat food. You can supplement their diet with fruit and veggies, such as: apples, carrots, corn, and avocado. These things should be given only once in a while, not every day! NEVER give your rat lettuce or broccoli. These could give them stomach trouble. This includes runny poo, gas, and (rarely) death. And NEVER give your rat chocolate. Or any pet! This can make an animal deathly sick. Also, give your rat small doses of fruit and veggies. Overfeeding them is not good. Just give them one apple slice at a time!

Rats need their cages cleaned once every two weeks. Don't use wood chips for rat bedding. This can lead to sneezing. And your rat can go blind! Use odorless litter from the pet store. Never put two rats of the same sex together, unless the rats are from the same litter. Otherwise your rats will fight to the death!!!! Don't put the males and females together unless you want 14 hairless babies! Newborn rats are as big as a dime! A female rat can mate two weeks after birth! WOW!!!
Rats are sweet loving animals. They are fun to play with, and live about 2-3 years. They make great pets!
